THEN NOW From a small and sleepy town to a bustling metropolis of almost 20 million people, Karachi has grown beyond recognition. Kolachi takes a look of some old photographs of city landmarks and shows how they have changed in the last 100 years. Merewether Clock Tower A majestic view of Merewether Clock Tower which was built as a memorial to Sir William L. Merewether, who served as Commissioner-in-Sindh from 1867 to 1877. Bohri Bazaar One of the oldest marketplaces in town was established in the 19th century, making some of the shops, here, more than 100 years old. Bunder Road Bunder Road remains a primary commercial access road, lined with numerous historical buildings. Empress Market The marketplace traces its birth to the British Raj era which was constructed between 1884 and 1889 and is named after Queen Victoria, Empress of India. Saddar Bazaar Located in the downtown of the city, Saddar Bazaar is now home to numerous markets dealing in various household products. – Text by Meena Ahmed –
