Bubbly, romantic tunes,
for a bubbly, romantic movie
Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu’s music is a crowd-pleaser

Youthful romcoms are indeed a promising genre. Not only do they seem interesting but they can also be an easy formula for success. A romcom with catchy songs, attractive locations, eye-catching clothes and scenes that radiate energy and freshness is all you need for a box office hit. Out of all these things, the music of any film is an integral part of the hype built up around the film and inspires people to watch a movie in the first place. Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu gets its list of catchy songs right.

Directed by Shakun Batra and produced by Karan Johar, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is a “witty, feel-good, slice-of-life comedy”. The story of Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu revolves around two carefree people, Rahul Kapoor (Imran Khan) and Riana Braganza (Kareena Kapoor), who get drunk together one night and then awake the next morning to find that they have gotten married to each other. Sound like What Happens in Vegas? It sure does, but considering Karan Johar is producing this one it can’t just be a rip off.

Composed by the National Award Winning composer, Amit Travedi, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu’s soundtrack makes the movie seem even more promising. The title track of the album, ‘Ek Main Aur Ek Tu’ is a great start. The track is the kind that oozes fun and happiness and leaves you joyful. Foot tapping tunes and catchy lyrics are the main reason why ‘Ek Main Aur Ek Tu’ sounds so good to the ears but what’s also interesting is how this song is picturized. The picturization is super fun and it shows the adventures of Imran and Kareena while they are drunk. Lyrics like “Ghum ki baatain bhool ja/ Khushiyan saja, Jo bhi hoga I am with you,” instantly strike a chord within the heart and is one of the reasons why the title track is such a hit and hot favourite with people already.

The album also contains a remix version of the title track and there is noticeable difference in the two. The remix is aimed more towards being a club version with more dance friendly beats.

‘Gubbare’ is the track that comes up next and there’s quite a chance that it might instantly remind you of ‘Dhoop Ke Makan’ from Break Ke Baad. Indeed there’s similarity between the two tracks but it still can’t be called a copy. ‘Gubbare’ is a soothing track with a country touch to it. Amit Trivedi, Shilpa Rao, Nikhil D’Souza, and Amitabh Bhattacharya all come together and give their own unique voice to this track, which blend in perfectly with the melody and end up making an impact. ‘Gubbare’ might not be a hit track but it’s a peaceful and tranquil track that is definitely worth listening.

The next track of the album has a rather funny name - ‘Auntiji’, this one’s for you! When you hear of such an interesting and unique name, expectations are bound to rise but somehow ‘Auntiji’ fails to deliver them. Strong jazz elements are used in the music and it might even be reminiscent of music from the ‘60’s era. Ash King’s vocals are perfectly alright but the melody and tune of the track lack the spark that this song required. Its only flaw it that it’s supposed to be a dance number but it fails to convince the listener to get up and let loose.

‘Aahatein’ is the highlight of this album, without any doubt! It makes its way slowly and softly into the album and makes a mark instantly. Karthik’s vocals are just stunning to say the least. The whispering vocals begin and develop as the song goes on and eventually Shilpa Rao joins him with a similar tone! The tune and melody of the track is so soft and calm that it makes the overall song just beautiful to listen to. Also, what makes this song so special is that it’s very calm and soothing. ‘Aahatein’ is probably the best track of the album and definitely worth listening to - on repeat!

‘Aahatein’ also has a remix version in the album, which is sung by Shekhar Ravijani instead of Karthik while Shilpa Rao remains the female vocalist who makes sure her performance in the remix version is equally good. Shekhar has a stronger and bolder voice in the remix, which is suitable too considering the fast paced tune in the background as compared to the original track. The remix version is also worth listening to and doesn’t lose the charm at all.

The song that winds up the album is ‘Kar Chalna Shuru Tu’, which has optimistic lyrics and points towards a happy ending! Vishal Dadlani and Shilpa Rao, who make quite an impact together, do the vocals. This song not only sums up the album and gives an impressive end but it also makes the Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu album a little more diverse.

The only flaw in this album is that it caters to a specific kind of an audience that would either love foot tapping beats or soothing songs. Had it included a variety of different tracks, it could have catered to a much larger audience. Nonetheless, a great album that makes you look forward to the movie.
