Sequinned mafia

Slightly scaring us this season is the trend that hit international runways for Spring 2010. It's something all Pakistani ladies are a little too familiar with (drumroll): sequins!
Where Isaac Mizrahi's Spring / Summer '10 collection showcased a while back played with tiny sequined skirts and dresses, Christophe Decarnin did this weird fusion of showgirl meets G.I Jane for Balmain. And Peter Dundas for Emilio Pucci worked aquatic prints that sometimes burst into completely sequined dresses. You get the picture.

What this means is that the trend will filter through to Pakistan, sooner or later. While sequins are girly and pretty, they are so reminiscent of aunties in the '80s that not a thousand awesome Wow Factor weddings will ever take away the slight nausea the sight of sequins on desi formals produces. Used very sparingly in subtle tones, yes, that might look good, elegant even. But sequins shall remain sequins.

Whether they dot sexy, sheer saris or encrust a long flowy jacket, one can't shake the feeling that sequins will never quite be anything but fun and colourful. Which is the other sequin-related fear one has. The only people who look good in an all-sequined ensemble are actresses playing Ariel the mermaid onstage or stylin' chicks going to the prom. In other words, decrease the amount of sequins on your outfit by the handful once you cross the age of 23. If you've crossed 35, avoid sequins altogether, and prevent future generations of girls from completely balking at the idea of sequins staging a comeback.
Of course, if you have your heart set on being the glittering belle of the ball, just remember, wear your sequins frugally, and you will wear them well.
