FASHION UPDATE

Planning the perfect holiday wardrobe

Before you even begin planning your wardrobe for a holiday, make sure you realize that there is no such thing as the perfect capsule wardrobe. Travelers who manage to look stylish and comfortable (exactly the same way you desire to look) have learnt from experience - the thousands of miles they have traveled and the hundreds of places they have visited. If you are one of them, it should be easy. If not, then take comfort in the fact that you will learn with time.

1. First of all, pick clothes that are appropriate for your destination without compromising on your own personal style. It's simple if you plan to rough it out in the northern areas of Pakistan. Your focus will be on staying warm and dry and you will automatically reach out for the denim and woollies. However, if you're traveling to an exotic tropical island, you'll want an entirely different look.

2. The first rule of holiday dressing is to be yourself. When you're away from home, feeling comfortable should be a priority. It's an advantage if you're an adventurous dresser and can easily switch from jeans to capris to skirts and even shorts. It will be difficult to experiment if you can't convince yourself to step out of your well worn shallus, but improvise instead of impersonate. Blend your style with the place you are traveling to. A shalwar kameez can very easily transform to a tunic with smartly tailored trousers. Don't change drastically because trying too hard is the biggest holiday fashion faux pas.

3. Be sure to pack at least one formal outfit as you never know who you'll bump into or where you'll end up dining. Some restaurants have very strict dress codes.

4. Try and pick fabrics that won't crumple away, especially if you're going somewhere where you won't have access to electricity and an iron.
5. If you're traveling by air, then be sure to carry a pair of socks and a light shawl as it can get very chilly in most international flights. Pashmina or cashmere is highly recommended because you won't be compromising on style in them.
