'Time
After Time'
Sarah with Cyndi Lauper
The huge hit from Cyndi Pauper gets re-done again and this time
its Sarah who rips away all the extra instruments and delivers a
very different version of the original. But what makes it so special
is that Cyndi makes an appearance on the vocals and both of these
women sing it together, a rare cover story.
This particular version starts off with a sharp acoustic guitar
and slowly drums and keyboards find their way, giving it a simple
and truly effective musical structure. Romantic to the core, filled
with an enduring love, this version brings a kind of subtle beauty
that previous artists such as Inoj and Matchbox Twenty who covered
the tune have failed to manage.

'Don't
Let Go'
Sarah with Bryan Adams
Marking a collaborative effort with Canadian rocker Bryan Adams
was a stroke of genius. 'Don't Let Go' is simply superb. It's got
a very haunted-tripped out vibe to it. The tune is mellow and Bryan
and Sarah play to that effect marvelously. One of the happier tunes
from Sarah, it is just amazing as the two of them sing, "I
can't believe this moments come /It's so incredible and we're alone/There's
so much to be said and done/It's impossible not to be overcome /Will
you forgive me if I feel this way/Cuz we just met tell me thats
ok/".
And when the chorus hit, Sarah sings, "Don't let go",
her vocals shine out as if echoing from a place far out.
Bryan Adams sounds rough, very sharp and in contrast, there are
Sarah's husky vocals, and both of them blend together magically.
This is also one of the best collaborations Bryan Adams has ever
done. Forget 'When You're Gone' with Melanie C. This is the tune
that is what a duet should be, bring out vocals, souls and uniting
them on a true blue melody.
Often critics have termed Sarah as "whiny" or "insipid"
but hear this version to know what she really is. It's pure genius.
'River'
Originally written and sung by Joni Mitchell, Sarah performs this
number on a lone piano keeps thing it simple. There are no instruments
killing its effects. A weeping piano and her powerful vocals as
she sings, "It's coming on Christmas/They're cutting down trees/They're
putting up reindeer singing songs of joy and peace/Oh I wish I had
a river/I could skate away on/But it don't snow here /It stays pretty
green/I'm going to make a lot of money/And then I'm going to quit
this crazy scene" - its beautiful.
Even though various artists have covered this song including actor
Robert Downey Jr, Sarah's version remains one of the most memorable.
Musically it's just simple and vocally overwhelming at times. She
hits high notes like a pro and at the same time let's the song remains
gentle, which is why it's so good. It breaks your heart and plays
with your mind.
This is a rare cover, one that is hardly written about, but deserves
a hear nonetheless. |
