While most television shows wait to resume their seasons in the fall, uplift your spirits by listening to the best that the TV show soundtracks have to offer. Becoming increasingly more important to holding an episode together - shows such as The O.C, Entourage, Grey's Anatomy, Scrubs and Gossip Girl have taken the TV show soundtrack to a whole new level. Alexandra Pastavas, the music supervisor for The O.C who was nominated for a Grammy for her work on the show, is the brains behind the soundtracks of the popular TV shows Gossip Girl and Grey's Anatomy. This week, we give you the best songs to have been featured on the Grey's Anatomy and Gossip Girl as of late...

Grey's Anatomy:
Ingrid Michaelson – 'Giving Up'

Ingrid Michaelson has been featured on the Grey's Anatomy soundtrack fairly often - and she doesn't fail to disappoint on 'Giving Up', a superb indie track that wavers, like the show, between shades of optimism and pessimism, as well as talks about the what-ifs associated with building up a new relationship. The chorus - sung plaintively by Ingrid - goes 'Cause I am giving up on making passes, and I am giving up on half empty glasses, and I am giving up on greener grasses. I am giving up', while Ingrid's soothing voice succeeds in making the rest of the song complement the moodiness associated with the lyrics.

Grey's Anatomy:
Ida Maria - 'Keep me Warm'

Ida Maria's Keep me Warm was featured on the season finale of Grey's Anatomy this spring. Since the song is played on the episode when the show's main characters finally get back together, it was hunted for frantically by Grey's Anatomy fans after the finale aired. 'Keep Me Warm', from Norwegian musician Ida Maria is a breathy, cute little pop song but minus the 'I love you, you love me' lyrics that have become the hallmark of pop music. The line 'all your cigarettes and coffee / they keep me warm' is sung in a rather poignant manner, while the song itself does wrap around the listener like a warm blanket. Among a bunch of prolific bands and singers, Ida lists the color red and 'good parties and really really bad ones' as her influences on her MySpace page.

Gossip Girl:
The Kooks - 'Do You Wanna'

Easily one of the most catchy songs on the surprise hit TV show Gossip Girl, Do You Wanna by The Kooks is a fun song with screeching vocals repeating the line 'do you wanna make love to me / I know you wanna make love to me' - with overtones of a rock song, replete with angsty guitar sounds, that just makes you want to jump up and down, sing at it the top of your voice (not too loudly though, don't want the neighbors getting any ideas) and listen to it about 20 times before you forget about it altogether.

Gossip Girl:
Angels and Airwaves
- 'The Gift'

Angels and Airwaves - an alternative rock band formed by Tom DeLonge (formerly of Blink 182) with former members of Hazen Street, The Distillers and The Offspring are featured on the Gossip Girl Soundtrack with the track 'The Gift'. While the lyrics are nothing special, the overall effect the song has is reminiscent of alternative music released in the 90s, particularly Blink 182, and grows on you, particularly if you're a fan of the genre and show.

Gossip Girl:
Machine Translations
- 'You'll Change'

Machine Translations' 'You'll Change' is another gem to be found on the Gossip Girl soundtrack. Described on the band's website as 'the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist and home-recordist J.Walker' this sweet pop song is a must-download. The chorus, especially the lines 'you'll change / I'll change' is definitely reminiscent of the lives of the show's characters, and is also one of the best alternative tracks featured on the show. Along with Ben Lee, another Australian gem, Machine Translations are putting Down Under on the music map.
