Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen***
*ing Shia LeBeouf, Megan Fox and Peter Cullen as the voice of Optimus Prime
Directed by Michael Bay
Tagline: Revenge is coming

The hype that led to the release of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen had cut it out to be larger than life. It was touted to being the grand sequel to the massive 2007 summer blockbuster - Transformers - that had kids and teenagers hooked to the ingenious extraterrestrials that were using Earth as their battleground. And when they returned, it was one big invasion. The Transformers returned to the big screen this summer in a sequel that you can either love or hate.

For all those people who have grown up on a bionic age of robots, androids and extraterrestrials, Transformers is the answer to every techie's wildest fantasy. To its disadvantage, it has endless bloopers and drags on endlessly over two hours (which is unnaturally long for a Hollywood movie). It has a plot and storyline that offers nothing new to the imagination. But having said that, people who have a fetish for the crunch of metal and the sound of rubber on the road, will find Transformers 2 irresistible. It's still a battle between good and evil but human protagonists and villains have been replaced with robotic Transformers and they come together in all delicious shapes and sizes.

From Optimus Prime, leader of the heroic Autobots to The Fallen, commander of the destructive Decepticons and Bumble Bee, the endearing Chevrolet Camero, they form an exciting force that is riveting to watch as it comes into action.

The story goes like this: two years after Sam Witwicky (Shia LeBeouf) came face to face with this alien race, the Autobots are still living on Earth, now in alliance with the US army. But no, they are not serving in Iraq or Afghanistan! As questions arise on whether the Transformers are more of a help or threat to Earth, a tiny piece of their commander Starscream (which crashed into Earth in the last movie) is unlocked in Sam's home, drawing millions of evil Decepticons to the planet (masterminded by their leader The Fallen) and starting a war that threatens to end all Autobots as well as all life on Earth.

It begins when Sam prepares to put his alien encounters behind him and leave for college, hoping to lead a normal life. But suddenly all Transformer ingenuity comes to life. One sees every kitchen contraption come alive. The kitchen blender turns into a metallic gremlin and is quite a sight. A car can never simply be a car again, nor a plane a plane. They are merely disguises for the Decepticons. Only Optimus Prime, supreme leader of the Autobots, can save his race as well as the humans from total destruction. And he needs Sam's help in the mission.

What Transformers 2 rises with is the wave of consumerism that has accompanied it worldwide. Thanks to co-producers and toy manufacturers, Hasbro, Transformers had invaded the market months before the film was to release. It was magnificent marketing assuring that every household - which had a young child holding a Transformer toy - would buy tickets to the watch the movie. And they did. Though the transformation of these alien creatures does not always make sense on screen, the actual figures that children bought helped clarify the how a truck could actually become Optimus Prime or how a yellow Camero could convert to Bumble Bee. And as far as the concept goes, one has to admit that it is incredibly fascinating. One witnesses Steven Spielberg's (he's executive producer on the film) obsession with alien forces rise another notch.

Equally fascinating is how director Michael Bay remembers to punctuate the film with an added attraction - Megan Fox - Sam's unbelievably hot girlfriend who the one human added to appeal to boys and men over the age of sixteen. Many dads have admitted to heading out to the cinema only to catch Fox in action. And why not: her lip-gloss doesn't wash off after hours of gruelling warfare and neither do her white denims stain. Her pout remains perfect and so does her cleavage and when finally (in the last half hour) her face does get smeared with grit, it is smeared in the most flattering way! She is the only human character worth writing about. Megan Fox included, the human actors in this film are merely sidekicks to the machines.

Eventually all that the film rides on is the magic of machines. The battle scenes are violent but that's exactly what fans of the genre expect to be served with. The Bots, tangled up in combat are fascinating though one has to say that they must be watched on the big screen for total justification. A pirated, bad print will not make sense at all. One can easily miss the shimmer of Jetfire's aluminium beard (he transforms from a Blackbird)

The movie has gotten terrible reviews for its poor story and script as well as its monotony but like every critically disclaimed movie, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is a blockbuster hit like no other. It's a must watch for action lovers especially if you have bought one of those Hasbro toy figures and spend the better half of the day transforming it from man to machine. Or even if you have the hots for Megan Fox. It truly is worth the watch.
