World Music Day: Spoonful,
Sara Haider and The Sketches let loose

A local radio station recently held celebrations to mark the coming of the World Music Day. Karachi got a taste of indie and underground sounds as acts such as 7 on 3rd, The Sketches, Sara Haider and others who played their brand of music, ranging from originals to covers to local hits.

The small gig started off with a performance by Hassan Hussain who belted out a solid cover of Ali Haider's 'Purani Jeans' before launching into his original ballad, 'Rangeen Raat'. 7 on 3rd, led by Gibran Nasir, played covers of popular songs such as Adele's 'Rolling In The Deep' and Vital Signs' 'Dil, Dil Pakistan.' The performers from Children's Academy of Performing Arts (CAPA) had the audience up on their feet with their thumping renditions of 'Moves Like Jagger' and 'Hey, Soul Sister'.

One of the most impressive performance of the evening came from Jamshoro-based band, Positive, who had the audience captivated with their soulful rendition of 'Alif Allah Meem Muhammad.' If Positive stay true to their craft, they will surely go far as musicians. Spoonful and Sara Haider (who made her presence felt on the second season of Uth Records) took on thumping songs like 'I Shot The Sheriff' and 'Fever'.

The biggest surprise performance of the evening went to Ali Gul Pir, the man behind the viral hit, Wadera Ka Beta'. Onstage, Ali was funny, engaging and entertaining as he belted out his famous song.

The most impressive and heartwarming performance came from Jamshoro sufi rockers, The Sketches
who delivered a moving rendition of 'Main Sufi Hoon' among a few other songs. ICU wrapped up proceedings with their punk-pop originals 'Paanch Chuhey' and 'Aisa Hee Sahee'.
