The
rapid growth of the fashion industry in Pakistan has triggered the
mushrooming of franchises of foreign brands within the country, adding
to brand diversity and a surfeit of product variety.
A recent addition to this plethora of renowned brands being introduced
was none other than NEXT the famous retailer of wardrobe basics that
Britons swear by. Located on the very lively Noor Jehan Road, in Gulberg,
Lahore, NEXT sits on the second floor of the impressive Xinhua Plaza.
As one enters, you are swept off your feet by the rather simple yet
chic decor of the shop. Low ceilings, huge clear windows (that give
a view of the busy street downstairs) and an elongated structure,
gives it a distinctive New York feel.
The NEXT retail chain was launched in February, 1982, by J Hepworth
& Son, Ltd. Its opening created a major stir on High Street throughout
the UK, changing the outlook of fashion retailing in the country.
The continued triumph of NEXT's distinctive and innovative shopping
concept has provided the company with an outstanding record of achievement
in a fairly short period of time.
The first store opened with an exclusive coordinated compilation of
trendy yet smart clothes, shoes and accessories for women. Soon after,
collections for men, children and furniture rapidly pursued. NEXT
clothes are styled by an in-house design team to offer uniformity
of style, class and value for money with a contemporary fashion edge.
Today, NEXT trades from over 460 stores in the UK and over 100 franchise
stores overseas. |

At
its opening on the 23 February, Instep caught up with the man behind
the franchise and had a look around the store.
The store features the men's collection on either side which includes
a variety of jeans, t-shirts, cardigans, ties, shoes, belts and an
array of accessories. The clothes vary for all times, be it for a
formal gathering, office wear or just every-day hassle free clothing.
The clothes are made from cotton, silk, lycra and denim.
The men's formal clothing is for the bold man who doesn't mind wearing
a startling pink shirt with a stylish silk tie and a pair of formal
yet laid-back khaki's to work. Making a statement without any effort
at all, is what NEXT is known for.The prices are

economical, keeping intact the quality offered by the brand, but the
shoes are steeper with prices ranging from 6000 to 8000 rupees and
the ties are in a myriad of colors and fabrics, the most stylish being
the silk ones ranging from 1700 to 3000 rupees. The casual wear is
also not restricting for any age bracket. Men's accessories include
smart watches, cuff links, and wallets etc |

As I proceeded
down the store, I noticed that the women's collection began with breathtaking
tops, pants, skirts, shoes, bags and beautiful accessories - which
were mainly semi-precious jewels embellished in rings, earrings, bracelets
and pendants. Formal work wear included pant suits for the professional
woman, ranging from 5000 to 6000 rupees. And cardigans, tunic tops
and shirts that were both casual and formal ranged from 2400 to 5000
rupees.
A number of striking bags including satchels, clutches and totes (to
accommodate the needs of the modern wild child as well as the sophisticated
young woman) were also offered at the store. The victims of foot fetish
should definitely visit the NEXT outlet as their collection included
pretty pumps, summer sandals, elegant evening shoes and office wear.
Apart from the array of shoes, chunky and sleek belts as well as scarves
were available that ranged between a modest 500 to 1400 rupees. |

Looking
around the store and getting a feel of its urbane classiness, I
had the opportunity to ask the customers what their views were on
the introduction of NEXT in Pakistan. Some of the customers present
at the opening were individuals who had had the opportunity to shop
at NEXT stores in England and other countries and their response
to the introduction of NEXT in Lahore was ecstatic at best. When
asked if the prices were nominal or over the top, a majority of
them (as patrons to the brand) seemed to agree that they didn't
mind the store's somewhat steep prices as the brand not only had
style, but that it also brought with it quality as well. The general
consensus was that brands such as NEXT only provided consumers with
more diversity in shopping for western clothing.
Towards the end I had the pleasure to meet the man behind the franchise
- Mr Yasin Piracha. Mr Piracha entered the franchising business
last year with the launch of Mothercare (which today is present
in both Lahore and Karachi) and divulged the fact that the site
for the second NEXT outlet had not only been chosen, but that it
was already work in progress! When asked why he decided to launch
NEXT and had not chosen any other brand, his response was simple:
"I wanted to go for a popular, subtle and uncomplicated fashion
brand not being an extreme. I wanted to choose something that everybody
would be able to understand". One had to agree as the brand
really does cater to all ages - primarily to people with elegance
and style. Towards the end of our discussion, Mr. Piracha stated
that not only would awareness in the local market be created through
the introduction of international brands, but that it was the best
way to increase investments for a country.
NEXT's vision is primarily to cater to each class of the society
and not just target a specific division. Giving consumer's value
for money, the brand is sure to be an absolute hit with fashion
conscious individuals across the city.
