Trainspotting:
Five Bollywood moments captured in, on and atop trains

Trains have always had a special significance in cinema - from films like Murder on the Orient Express to Polar Express. But it's Bollywood that has made trains not just a form of transport, but a place to fall in love with the person of your dreams, stage dramatic scenes and even dance atop. Instep goes trainspotting into Bollywood.

1. The Eurorail as the great Indian railways love story: Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge
14 years after its release, this film still makes one want to head on a madcap journey through Switzerland! DDLJ truly launched SRK and Kajol as Bollywood's best on-screen couple in recent years, but what made this movie so brilliant was the train element that made 'backpacking through Europe' not just a hippie nomadic tale but a Bollywood saga. SRK and Kajol's endless travails on Eurorail, where they meet, the way they get together because they miss the train is now iconic in Indian film history. And then their eventual union on an Indian Railways train, in that memorable scene of SRK leaning out of a carriage door and Kajol, dressed in full bridal glory running towards him, made a million hearts swoon. It gave train journeys a whole new meaning and even was the entire reference point for last year's hit Bachna Ae Haseeno, with Ranbir Kapoor and Minisha Lamba taking several leaves out of the book Rahul and Simran had written in DDLJ, replete with the Switzerland setting and featuring Eurorail and Indian Railways yet again!

2. Haunted by trains: Meena Kumari in Pakeezah
Trains took on a whole new significance in the classic 1972 film Pakeezah, starring Meena Kumari and Raj Kumar. While the film is based on a courtesan's life, trains feature prominently through the film and trouble Meena Kumari. And in yet another classic scene from Bollywood, Raj Kumar sees Meena Kumari lying down in a train carriage, but the only part of her he can see are her feet. And the 'beauty' of those feet propel him to write her a letter and leave it with her, saying "apne paaon zameen pe mat utariye ga, maile hojayeinge" (do not put your feet on the ground, they will get dirty). This momentous gesture haunts Meena as every time she hears a train going through the area, she remembers the stranger who wrote her the letter and then left it under her feet - and you can even hear the train chugging away in the song 'Chalte Chalte'.

3. Malaika and SRK dance up a storm on a train in 'Chaiyya Chaiyya'
It was the song that made every woman want to be Malaika and every man want to be dancing with her. Scores of Bollywood films have featured songs with the hero leaning out of the train window or even sitting atop a train but no one has ever gotten their dance moves on atop a train so right. SRK and Malaika Arora, in the hit 'Chaiyya Chaiyya' from Dil Se took extreme dancing to a whole new level by dancing atop a moving train. The song was always going to be a hit because it was so catchy, but Malaika's item number, clad in a choli ghagra, and SRK grooving with her made one go 'wow' - and hopelessly daydream away. Definitely a railway record!

4. Jab We Met
On a Train!
When Kareena Kapoor jumped on a train, talking a hundred words a minute and leaving the passengers dazzled, it was the moment one knew this film would be a hit. Kareena meets Shahid Kapur on the train and the combination of her bubbly optimism and his morose outlook is classic. In another throwback to DDLJ, they also miss the train and end up travelling all over Punjab so Kareena can reach her hometown of Bhatinda. But that fateful train meeting plays out throughout the film, and that backdrop of trains, scenic villages and Shahid and Kareena's chemistry really makes one want to be left alone standing on a platform, waiting for Shahid to come to the rescue!

5. Trainfighting: Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra in Sholay
Never trust a pair of criminals is what Sanjeev Kumar learnt on a train in Sholay. While transporting petty criminals Amitabh and Dharmendra, more thieves (!) besiege the train and Sanjeev, a police officer, enlists the help of these two to help defeat the robbers and opens their handcuffs. Total madness ensues with all three of them punching and kicking the robbers out - but in the ensuing melee Amitabh and Dharmendra escape. Oh well, cunning is what cunning does! And Bollywood train fights don't start and end with Sholay but have lived through films like Vidhata and even the more recent Don: The Chase Begins or Dhoom 2.
