Hotstepper of the week
Sherry Rehman

Apart from being the best dressed lady politician to ever emerge on our rather unfashionable political landscape, Sherry Rehman has always been a vision on television. Perfect red lips, immaculately kohled eyes, perfect hair and a very professional take on the traditional shalwar kameez, she is every inch a woman and a very progressive one too. But she is not our hotstepper this week for those reasons, though they are important too. We've chosen her because of the far reaching consequences of her resignation as Information Minister.

Sherry created a media storm when she resigned, and deservedly so because she did it to protest against the government playing dirty with certain media networks to control the news about the now victorious Long March. This act of Sherry's has given the people of Pakistan something to believe in. Even conservatives, who eyed the well-heeled Sherry with skepticism, have been floored by her principled stand. And the awam love her now.
Columnist Nasim Zehra mentioned this in a piece titled 'Umeed-e-Sehar?' in The News on March 25. She had coffee with Sherry at a restaurant in Islamabad and the waiter refused to charge them. "Madam, we are so proud of you that you resigned and we were hoping you would come here!" he said to the ex-Information Minister.
Here's to Sherry Rehman then for being a vision with a vision and having the guts to live by her conviction!
