It is the year of statement jewellery and the most sweeping statement one can make this season is with earrings. Our history is rife with accounts of fantastic jewels worn by the Mughals and it's a love that hasn't died over the centuries…its only grown stronger. And with this year's statement pieces creating inordinate amounts of buzz in fashion capitals around the world, how can we be left behind? Long, outrageously blingy, long earrings are the way to go this season. And they needn't be ear-benders. Look for comfortably light pieces that don't strain your ears and just graze your shoulder. Whether its eastern heirloom pieces or funkier strings of gems, they can add a punch to any plain outfit or add the finishing touch to a great one.

And even if you can't carry off the long earrings, look for shorter ones in innovative shapes and styles. If you trawl hard enough through the baskets of jewellery at street markets and upscale stores you'll be able to walk away with a pair of faux gems that truly deserve lending an ear to!
