As Mamma Mia! The Smash Hit Musical wraps up its Karachi run and starts preparing for Lahore, it's Nida Butt who is our hotstepper of the week… for daring to dream the dream that musicals (albeit borrowed word for word and song for song from the west) could be staged in the land of the pure. For breaking out with Chicago and then next year doing Mamma Mia! For finding men and women who can sing and dance and holding auditions for her plays. For giving us a true star in the shape of Sanam Saeed with Chicago and following that up with Rachel Viccaji and Kiran Chaudhry both of whom have impact on stage. For making sure that music is live, unlike a Bollywood stage show inspired lip sync routine. And most of all for giving us a chance to forget our woes, personal and national, for a couple of hours that lift our spirits so that we are singing Abba
for days. And for those of you who say that Nida Butt's brand of theatre is too frivolous… hey, anyone who can give us pure, unadulterated FUN these days has our vote! |
