Rally against 'attack' on freedom of press

SHIKARPUR: Rallies were taken out in Shikarpur and Badin on Sunday to protest against the victimisation of the Jang Group of Newspapers by the government. In Shikarpur, the Bureau offices of Jang and The News organised a protest rally participated by leaders and workers of various political parties.

The protesters marched through different streets of the town, chanting slogans against the government's policies towards the press. At Lakhi Gate, senior journalists, PPP's leader Sardar Wahid Bux Bhayo, Jamat-e-Islami's Mehmood Ilahi and others addressed the participants of the rally.

They criticised the government for victimising the Jang Group of Newspapers and termed government's action as 'attack' on free press. They said government's unwise moves against the freedom of the press were defaming Pakistan in the world community. The speakers demanded of the government to immediately stop victimising the Jang Group.

Similarly, a protest raly was taken out jointly by the local journalists and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on Sunday against the victimisation of the Jang Group by the government. Over 30 journalists from all over the district attended the meeting arranged by the Badin Press Club President Allah Rakhio "Naeem".

The journalists' rally turned into a procession which marched on the streets. Meanwhile, a large number of PPP activists, including District PPP, President & MPA Dr Sikandar Ali Mandhro, PPP G S Abdul Ghaffar Nizamani and Nadir Khawaja joined the journalists.
