Study revealed banning mobile phones in schools help achieving better GCSE grades

A new study has revealed that banning mobile phones in schools helps in achieving better results.

The report by Policy Exchange found that, the GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) result at England’s school with ‘effective ban’ were one to two grades higher as compared to the schools with a relaxed approach.

As per Sky News, the investigation suggested only 11% of secondary schools have an ‘effective ban’ on mobile phones.

An effective ban means that either mobile phones are not allowed in the school, or it is stored away in lockers at the start of the day.

Moreover, the study found that 52% of schools banned phones during the school day, but they were kept with the students.

Meanwhile, 36% have a partial ban, where phone is banned in some places but allowed in others.

Policy Exchange, a centre-right think tank, analysed that there is a ‘clear correlation’ between bans and better school performance.

Chairman of Culture, Media and Sports Select Committee, Dame Caroline Dinenage noted, “The data collected in this report delivers a stark message to policymakers: mobile phones disrupt education and worsen educational outcomes."
