The U.S. Army is facing a critical safety issue as its AH-64 Apache attack helicopters suffer severe accidents at a historically high rate.

Military accident reports show five major crashes since last October. The spike in incidents puts this year on pace to become one of the worst periods for Apache flight safety in over a decade.

Faulty transmission parts

At the center of the problem is a widespread defect within the helicopter’s main transmission system. Military flights crews report severe mechanical failures in the cockpit which make the heavy aircraft difficult to control.

An active pilot warned about the deteriorating situation, noting, “Aircraft are going to break, that’s kind of a given in this life but it feels like a snowball effect.”

Fatal Texas crash

The crisis hit a breaking point following a deadly training crash in Texas that killed two soldiers, started a nearby wildfire and forced military commanders to order a safety review.

In response, the Army temporarily halted all non-essential Apache training flights. Officials recently ended the temporary pause, stating that essential operations and combat deployments must proceed.

Pressure on aviators

Pilots express growing concern that mechanical flaws combined with squeezed flight schedules create a dangerous environment.

Class A mishaps – accidents resulting in death, permanent disability, or over $2.5 million in damage – are well above average yearly numbers.

Military investigators continue inspecting the aircraft fleet to fix transmission faults before more crews face life-threatening failures in the sky.
