Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has formally apologized to fans after reacting emotionally to loud booing during a 31-7 preseason home loss against the Buffalo Bills.
Initially calling the crowd’s negative reaction “disrespectful” and “personal” following the game, Watson chose to step back and clarify his position to reporters.
Emotions take over
Addressing the media directly, Watson admitted that he let his feelings get the best of him in the heat of the moment. He explained his change of heart by stating:
“I thought I was going to get a little different response but I think my emotions got the best of me and my comments wasn’t intending to go at any of the fans around in the city because there’s been a lot of great fans that have been supporting me.”
Tension in Cleveland
The fan frustration stems from a long history of high expectations, injuries and off-field struggles since Watson joined the team on a guaranteed $230 million contract.
Furthermore, Watson had felt lingering anger from an incident in October 2024, when some fans cheered after he suffered a torn Achilles tendon.
Looking forward
Despite the off-field tension and heavy competition from backup quarterback Shedeur Sanders, Watson remains slated to start in Week One against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
He hopes to put the conflict behind him, regain the trust of the home crowd and let his play on the football field speak for itself moving into the regular season.
