The NBA has imposed historic sanctions on the LA Clippers organization following a detailed independent investigation. The league issued a staggering $30 million fine to the franchise and stripped them of five future first-round-draft picks spanning from 2029 through 2033.
The severe disciplinary action comes after investigators concluded the team engaged in a repeated pattern of salary cap circumvention tactics.
Owner Steve Ballmer handed one-year ban
As part of the widespread penalties, Clippers owner Steve Ballmer received a one-year suspension from all team and league activities. Investigators determined Ballmer knowingly assisted star player Kawhi Leonard in securing improper off-court income opportunities through third-party partners.
Additionally, front-office executives Gillian Zucker and Lawrence Frank face suspensions of one year and six months respectively for their direct roles in facilitating these unauthorized financial arrangements.
Kawhi Leonard fined in salary cap probe
Kawhi Leonard was personally fined $700,000 after findings showed his representatives pressured the front office for unapproved commercial benefits and failed to reimburse personal expenses covered by the franchise.
While Leonard released a statement accepting responsibility for lapses by his inner circle, the NBA and NBPA finalized the ruling as binding.
Meanwhile, the Clippers organization has publicly disputed the findings, labeling the investigation unfair and announcing plans to formally challenge the sanctions through arbitration.
