New Mexico pushes back after US President Donald Trump renamed the state "New America.”

According to CNN, days after changing Lake Ontario's name, Trump on Sunday, September 6, proposed that New Mexico should be renamed as “New America.”

The 80-year-old posted his AI-generated (artificial intelligence) video of changing the New Mexico name on his social media platform Truth Social.

In the beginning of the video, a billboard saying "Welcome to New Mexico, land of enchantment" could be seen.

The Republican president then appeared to walk toward the board and placed “America” at the place of “Mexico” before doing his signature dance.

He wrote, “Many people suggested changing the name of New Mexico, one of the great vote-cheating states of all time, to NEW AMERICA. So much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible state. Wow, I Love It!!!”

Trump also posted an image of a map that showed the word "Mexico" crossed with red color and replaced by "America," which was later reshared by the White House official account on X.

In response to the post, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, a Democrat, accused Trump of trying to distract Americans, insisting that “New Mexico’s name isn’t up for debate.”

She said on X, “While the president tries to distract Americans from his disastrous war in Iran, gas prices keep soaring. While the White House wastes time coloring on maps, Nuevo México is busy doing the work.”

US senators criticize Trump over the New Mexico rename suggestion

US Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM) wrote, “Three things I will always call by their actual names: the Gulf of Mexico, Lake Ontario, and New Mexico.”

US Senator Ray Luján said, “It’s New Mexico, always has been and always will be. Just like how you’ll always be a sinvergüenza and corrupt.”

“Oh hell no. Our state’s name carries generations of history, culture, and family, and it belongs to us. We’re New Mexicans. Period,” US Representative Melanie Stansbury stated.

For the unversed, in addition to the renaming of Lake Ontario to Lake America in the system late last month, Trump also used an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America in January 2025, on his first day back in office.
