Qatar issued an urgent warning on Tuesday against any potential closure of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, cautioning that losing access to the critical waterway would lead to catastrophic consequences for global trade and energy security.
Speaking at a press conference, Qatari Foreign Ministry official Ibrahim Al-Hashmi emphasized that the international community is already under severe strain from ongoing trade disruptions and cannot endure another major supply chain shutdown.
A compounding maritime crisis
The warning comes as maritime security concerns escalate across the Middle East. Al-Hashmi noted that the global economy is already coping with a months-long blockade at the Strait of Hormuz.
Adding a shutdown of Bab el-Mandeb to the current situation would paralyze essential sea routes connecting Asia, Europe and the Middle East, compounding delays and driving up freight and energy costs worldwide.
Strategic significance of the waterway
Bab el Mandeb serves as the southern gateway to the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, carrying millions of barrels of oil and vast amounts of commercial cargo every day.
Security concerns near the passage have heightened following increased activity by the Houthi movement along Yemen’s Red Sea coastline. A disruption here forces commercial ships to bypass the region entirely taking much longer and far more expensive routes around the southern tip of Africa.
Call for urgent diplomacy
Doha stressed that preventing a full-scale maritime breakdown requires immediate international cooperation. Reaffirming Qatar’s position, Al-Hashmi urged all regional and global parties to prioritize dialogue and diplomatic solutions to de-escalate tensions and secure unhindered navigation through vital international shipping lanes.
