Real reason 'Dhurandhar' missed India's Oscar 2027 entry: Which film was selected?

Despite securing an unprecedented box office success, Dhurandhar was not selected as India's entry for the 99th Academy Awards.

Explaining the decision, a member of the Film Federation on India jury, Vivek Vaswani, has revealed the truth amid the social media buzz.

Speaking to NDTV, Vivek said, "Couple of people liked it but we didn't think that it was Oscar material."

Which film was selected as India's entry for the 2027 Oscars?

Instead, Marathi film Gondhal was selected to represent India as the official entry for the Oscars.

He shared that Ranveer Singh's starer did not represent the country's culture in the way that they were looking for while finalising their decision regarding the Academy Awards.

How many votes did 'Dhurandhar' receive?

Vivek also revealed that out of 14 jury members, only four voted for Dhurandhar to be selected for the Oscars' entry.

As per the report, Gondhal was selected from 33 films, including 14 Hindi films, four Marathi films, four Telugu films, three Gujarati films, three Tamil films, one Malayalam film, one Nepali film and one film from Nagaland.

The jury's final three films were Gondhal, Angh and Maine Vaapas Aayunga, with the Marathi film eventually being selected as India's official entry for the 2027 Oscars.

Gondhal, directed and written by Santosh Davakhar, is a thriller set against the backdrop of Maharashtra's traditional midnight ritual and folk-performance form from which it takes its name.

The film has also made its mark on the international festival circuit, with Davakhar winning the Silver Peacock Award for Best Director at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in 2025.
