Major news organizations CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed a joint lawsuit against the administration on Monday following the sudden revocation of press credentials for their White House correspondents.
The legal challenge submitted in the U.S. District Court for Washington, D.C., alleges that barring their journalists directly violates constitutional First Amendment protections guaranteeing a free and independent press.
Sudden access revocation
The lawsuit follows an announcement last Friday when the president announced a ban on all three outlets labeling their coverage “fake news.”
By Saturday morning, journalists attempting to enter the White House complex were turned away at security checkpoints and several had their physical press passes deactivated and confiscated by Secret Service personnel.
Constitutional defense
In a joint statement, the media organizations declared they filed the emergency action to stop government interference in independent reporting.
“Without notice or process, the White House revoked our journalists’ credentials because it objected to our reporting,” the outlets stated.
“Left unchallenged, this threatens press freedom and the public’s right to independent journalism free from government control.”
Industry support & precedent
The White House Correspondents’ Association strongly condemned the administration’s actions, warning that excluding outlets based on critical coverage sets a dangerous precedent for all news organizations.
Legal experts note that federal courts have previously ordered the administration to restore access, ruling that revocation cannot be based on a news organization’s editorial content. A federal judge is expected to review the emergency filing in the coming days.
