Alex Karp, the billionaire CEO and co-founder of Palantir Technologies, has quietly acquired roughly 37,000 acres of forest in the Harjedalen region of Sweden.
Executed through his newly registered Swedish firm, Cladonia Skog AB, the transaction was valued at 235 million Swedish kronor (approximately $22 million).
Karp purchased the vast contiguous timberland from Swedish paper giant SCA AB, which considered the parcel suboptimal for commercial logging operations.
Local uproar and hunting bans
The secret real estate deal only came to light when local Swedish hunting groups were abruptly informed that their long-standing land leases had been terminated.
A key condition of the sales agreement explicitly banned hunting across the property, stripping multiple local hunting teams of their generational access rights.
Municipal leaders and local Swedish authorities confirmed there was no advance notification or context regarding the massive private acquisitions before the news broke.
Conservation or security strategy
Representatives for Cladonia Skog AB stated that the multi-million-dollar land acquisition is intended for environment preservation, wildlife habitat restoration and sustainable forestry.
However, the transaction has fueled widespread public controversy. Critics, local residents and industry observers are questioning the underlying motivations of the tech tycoon, pointing to expanding carbon credit markets, ultra-wealthy land speculation and Palantir’s extensive, high-stakes defense intelligence partnerships across NATO and European nations.
