Sir Elton John has been sober since July 29, 1990, marking 36 years of recovery.

The music icon has described seeking treatment as one of the most important achievements of his life.

After years of struggling with cocaine, alcohol and prescription drugs during the 1970s and 1980s, John entered recovery and transformed his personal life and career.

What made Elton John to kick off sobriety journey

Elton John’s path to sobriety began after the 1990 death of his friend Ryan White, which became a turning point in his struggle with addiction.

On July 29, 1990, he entered rehab in Chicago and later took a year away from work to focus on recovery.

As part of his recovery, John embraced a 12-step program and learned to approach sobriety one day at a time.
