A round face can look soft, youthful and naturally fresh, but with the right makeup techniques, you can add definition for a more sculpted finish.
The trick lies in the right placement of blush, contour and highlight, which can help create a more defined look without looking overdone, according to Selena Gomez’s makeup artist Hung Vanngo.
On his YouTube channel, Vanngo revealed how he does glam on Gomez’s iconic round face to give her more lifted and defined appearance, sharing five of his best tricks.
Start with the right foundation shade for your skin tone
The secret to a perfect makeup look starts with the perfect foundation match. Hung Vanngo recommends keeping two shades of foundation, which allow you to mix them whenever your skin tone changes.
Brighten the center of your face with concealer
Using a concealer that is two shades lighter than your skin tone under the eyes, around the nose, the side of the mouth, and chin helps bringing focus to the center of the face, diverting attention from the sides which make the face appear defined.
Choose soft shading over a sharp contour
One of the clever makeup tricks Hung Vanngo shared included shading the face instead of doing a harsh contour.
"I don't want to call it contouring because it sounds really heavy and some people don't need it. But because she'll be on camera a lot, the light blows out everything and I like to bring back the shading with bronzing cream,” he shared.
The expert revealed that for a round face like Selena Gomez’s, it is best to apply shading under the cheekbones, the jawline, and the hairline.
Enhance face shading with a touch of bronzer
To further sculpt the face without adding more cream products, bronzer is the perfect addition according to Vanngo.
In the video, he recommended lightly layering powder bronzer over the shaded areas, noting that it adds natural warmth while helping set the cream contour.
Apply blush strategically for a flattering finish
Blush placement is the key to the perfect sculpted and defined face, and according to Vanngo, for people having a round face, it is important to apply that pop of color “a little higher on the cheekbone” rather than on the apple of your cheeks.
"I generally like the blush a little higher on the cheekbone. I think it gives the face a little lift," he shared, adding, "If you want a sweet innocent look, you can [apply] around the cheek area,” which Gomez revealed were the game-changing tips for her.
