Protests across France turned violent as demonstrators got involved in a clash with police in Paris and other cities, with hundreds detained amid increasing outrage over education standards and the increasing cost of living.

As per BBC, authorities reported over 200 protestors were arrested across the nation amid increasing tensions during a major day of demonstrations involving students, workers and supporters of the so-called Yellow Vest movement

In Paris, riot police were launched to the Les Halles area amid intensifying clashes around Place de la République.

Police used water cannons to disperse protesters, while fires broke out in the streets.

Despite the violence, multiple demonstrators continued to march peacefully, calling for enhanced education and greater equality.

Violence was also reported in other major French cities. In Lyon, the city's tourist office was heavily damaged after masked protesters smashed windows and a fire broke out inside the building. The city's mayor, Grégory Doucet, described the incident as a tragedy for Lyon.

A report suggested protestors broke into public buildings and damaged shops, prompting condemnation from local officials.

Moreover, officials reported heated conflict from both sides, vandalism and looting in Toulon and Caen, resulting in the injury of police officers.

Ignited protest follows student-led protests across the country

The demonstrations come after a few weeks of student-led protests, with organisers seeking broader participation from trade unions and groups associated with the Yellow Vest movement that mobilised over economic inequalities.

Students told the BBC they were demanding better educational opportunities and a more secure future.

Some denounced the violence while defending the right to protest.

French PM says country will not be 'intimidated' by violence

France’s Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu stated the country will not be “intimidated” by violence during today’s protests.

Taking to his Instagram, France’s PM wrote, “People have the right to protest peacefully, but there is no place for “arson, looting, and attacks.”

"To those who clearly want to use this violence as a 'warm-up' before the presidential election, I say clearly: We will not let ourselves be intimidated. No one will impose their political agenda through violence," he added.
