President Donald Trump said on Sunday that renovation work on the historic East Potomac Golf Links in Washington, D.C., will begin on November 15. He posted on Truth Social that the public course will become “one of the Best and Most Spectacular Golf Courses anywhere in the World.”

The project, designed with architect Tom Fazio, is expected to take about 15 months. When finished, it will stay open to the public and be able to host major events such as the U.S. Open, PGA Championship, Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup.

Judge’s order still in place

This announcement comes while a federal court case is ongoing. U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes has ordered the government to give advance notice before any major construction or irreversible changes.

Last week she temporarily stopped further tree cutting through October 26 after crews removed more than 400 healthy trees over a holiday weekend with little warning.

Reyes called the rapid tree work “inexcusable” and said officials rushed it because of Trump’s push for a quick redesign, not a long-standing maintenance plan.

Legal fight continues

The D.C. Preservation League and local residents sued earlier this year. They argue the overhaul could harm the environment and erase historic features of the century-old public course.

The administration has said plans were still early and conceptual. After Trump’s post, the judge asked officials to confirm whether their position had changed.

Trump did not mention the court case in his message, which included an artist’s rendering of the new layout. The course sits near the National Mall and has long been a popular, affordable public golf spot.

Officials must still follow the judge’s notice rules for any permanent changes while the lawsuit moves forward. The November 15 start date sets up a clear test of how the court order and the announced timeline will interact.
