Independent Federal MP Helen Haines is fighting for her life in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle in a targeted attack outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, regional Victoria.

The 65-year-old Member for Indi was reportedly unloading items from the boot of her vehicle on Murphy Street around 3:30 p.m. when a four-wheel drive ploughed into her.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene following reports that Dr. Haines sustained severe lower-body injuries in the collision. Bystanders quickly stepped in to assist before paramedics transported her to medical care, where doctors describe her condition as critical.

Suspect arrested and counter-terror probe activated

A male suspect was taken into custody at the scene. Witnesses reported that the driver possessed a knife which was swiftly confiscated by a brave bystander prior to police arriving.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the deliberate nature of the incident during a press conference in Sydney, revealing that the Joint Counter-Terrorism Team – comprising the Australian Federal Police, Victoria Police and ASIO – has been formally activated to investigate.

“This was a very serious incident – this wasn’t an accident,” Albanese stated, confirming that authorities are examining the suspect’s background to determine a motive.

Family statement and political reaction

In a statement, Dr. Haines’ family expressed gratitude to the swift-acting bystanders and health workers assisting her recovery, while requesting privacy during this difficult period.

Meanwhile, political leaders across all parties have extended their support and well wishes for the veteran regional politician.
