Veteran Scottish National party politician John Swinney has been elected as Scotland’s first minister following the formal resignation of Humza Yousaf.

As per BBC, in a parliamentary vote held at Holyrood, Swinney emerged victorious over three rival nominees: Alex Cole-Hamilton, Douglas Ross, and Anas Sarwar, who lead the Scottish Liberal Democrats, Scottish Conservatives, and Scottish Labour.

Meanwhile, Swinney's ascent to power was aided by the decision of the Scottish Greens to abstain from the vote.

The SNP has 63 members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs), while the opposition parties altogether have 65 MSPs.

Lorna Slater, co-leader of the Greens, said the SNP had the right to form a government but did not have “an automatic right to our votes”.

While, Yousaf’s decision to end a power-sharing deal with the Greens triggered the political crisis that ended in his decision to resign last week when he could not rely on his former coalition partners in a vote of no confidence.

Moreover, Swinney, a former deputy first minister and finance secretary, says he'll lead in a fair way and work with all sorts of parties to make new laws even though his group doesn't have the most seats.
