Muhammad Mokhber, the vice president of Iran, is expected to serve as the interim president following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi.

According to Reuters, the 68-year-old vice president, as per the constitution, will take charge of presidential duties until the election.

As per article 131 of Iran's constitution, “If a president dies in office, the first vice president, who is Mohammad Mokhber, takes over, with the confirmation of the supreme leader.

Unlike other countries, in Iran, the first vice president is not elected; it is an appointed position with some of the powers of the prime minister.

Raisi appointed the seventh vice president, Mokhber, shortly after taking office.

Mokhber is also close to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and also served for 14 years as the head of Setad, an investment fund linked to the supreme leader.

Mokhber, was in the team who visited Moscow in October and agreed to supply missiles and drones to the Russian military.

The European Union also formally permitted him for alleged involvement in nuclear or ballistic missile activities.

Moreover, Mokhber is part of the three-member council, along with the speaker of parliament and the head of the judiciary, responsible for arranging an election for a new president within a maximum period of 50 days.

Although a presidential election in Iran had been due to take place in 2025, however, it can now be expected to take place by early July.
