Babar Azam speaks out on captaincy controversy with Shaheen Afridi
Babar Azam talks about his bond with former T20 captain Shaheen Afridi

Pakistani cricket team skipper Babar Azam, spoke for the first time about Shaheen Afridi controversy since becoming T20 captain.

During his conversation with the press on Wednesday, Azam opened up about his bond with Shaheen Afridi expressing, “I get surprised by the rumours I see on social media. Shaheen and I have a great bonding. Our target is only to play and win matches for our country. Pakistan is our only priority.”

He added, “I want to make clear that Shaheen and my bond is not recent. It goes back a long way…. We don't think of individual glory, and thankfully, those elements are not present in our team.”

Talking about the World Cup combination, the world’s number 1 ODI batsman mentioned, “There are twelve matches to go before the start of the World Cup. We are testing different combinations. Nothing has been finalized as yet when it comes to picking the best for the T20 World Cup.”

Azam also stressed that the T20 series against New Zealand holds a lot of importance before the upcoming mega event.

It should be noted that Sheen Afridi was appointed as the T20 captain after the ICC World Cup 2023.

However, after leading the team for just one series against New Zealand in January, the pacer was removed from the captaincy and Babar Azam was reassumed as captain of the team.
