Kamala Harris officially takes the lead as Democratic presidential nominee

Kamala Harris will become the first Black woman and first Asian American to lead a major party’s ticket

Kamala Harris has officially secured the Democratic nomination for US president on Friday, according to Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison.

As per multiple outlets, Harris will become the first Black woman and first Asian American to lead a major party’s ticket.

The announcement came during a virtual event, where Harris expressed her honor at being the presumptive nominee saying, "I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for president of the United States."

The virtual voting process began on Thursday and will continue until Monday evening, but Harris has already received the necessary votes from delegates.

Harris, who became the likely nominee after President Joe Biden endorsed her and ended his campaign, is the only candidate on the ballot.

She garnered the required 300 delegate signatures, setting her up for a smooth nomination process compared to her previous presidential run in 2020, when she withdrew before the Iowa caucuses.

The campaign’s momentum has been bolstered by a record-breaking $310 million raised in July, more than double the amount raised by Republican nominee Donald Trump for the same period.

Additionally, the official nomination process will include a ceremonial roll call at the Democratic convention in Chicago, beginning August 19.
