Torrential rain accompanied by strong winds is likely to occur across Boston and surrounding areas on Sunday, which may trigger flash flooding, especially across several parts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
A First Alert is in effect as widespread rain develops via Sunday morning and afternoon.
Forecasters stated most areas could receive around 0.5 to 1.5 inches of rainfall, while narrow bands of heavier rain may produce 2 to 4 inches within just a few hours.
The greatest flash flood risk is likely from Providence, Rhode Island, into interior southeastern Massachusetts.
Heavy pockets of rain are also possible late Sunday morning into the early afternoon, especially around Buzzards Bay and the South Shore.
A flood watch remains in effect through the afternoon for Boston and much of the area to its south. Some thunderstorms could also accompany the heaviest rainfall.
Rain is likely to gradually weaken from west to east between about 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., although some light showers may persist in multiple locations.
A few showers could linger into Monday morning, mainly across eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. However, much drier and more comfortable weather is likely afterward.
Monday and Tuesday are forecast to bring seasonable temperatures in the low to mid-70s, along with lower humidity.
Warmer and more humid conditions may return from Wednesday through the end of the week as southerly winds push temperatures into the upper 70s.
