A North Carolina pastor is recovering in the hospital after suffering a stroke while being held in federal immigration custody. Family members say the faith leader was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a routine check-in leaving his congregation and loved ones in shock.
Health collapses in custody
According to relatives, the pastor’s health rapidly declined while he was detained. Family members stated that he began experiencing severe numbness and speech difficulties before being rushed to an outside medical facility.
“He went into custody healthy and now he is fighting for his recovery,” his family shared in a statement.
Family demands immediate care
The family claims that medical treatment was delayed inside the detention center, worsening his condition. They are urging immigration authorities to grant him immediate release on humanitarian grounds so he can receive specialized care.
“No one should face a life-threatening medical emergency while sitting behind bars” said a spokesperson representing the family.
