New York City, Long Island and parts of the Tri-State are hit with heavy rain, flash floods and tornado warnings.
According to ABC7, parts of Queens and Nassau County received tornado warnings on Thursday night, August 20, following severe thunderstorms across the New York region.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman wrote in a statement, “A tornado touched down in Nassau County minutes ago in Atlantic Beach. So far there are no reports of casualties or serious injuries. There is property damage at Silver Point Beach Club and Sun and Surf that is being assessed right now, and a search team has been mobilised to make sure no one is trapped within the cabanas.”
A heavy downpour in NYC caused problems for the underground subway system. The MTA announced the suspension of C train service as crews remove water from the tracks near Utica Avenue.
Meanwhile, the E trains were facing delays in both directions. A train service was also hit with severe delays.
Waterspout forms off South Shore of Long Island
Video circulating online also appeared to show a waterspout forming offshore near Atlantic Beach.
In a statement Thursday night, the National Weather Service said they are "reviewing damage, ground truth and radar data from two waterspouts that may have impacted portions of the eastern Rockaways and Atlantic Beach in southern Queens and Nassau counties."
They said both waterspouts appeared to have come ashore between 6:30 and 7 pm.
Furthermore, Sun and Surf Beach Club, in an update on Instagram, said, “Out of an abundance of caution, Silver Point and Sun and Surf will be temporarily closed until further notice.”
“We are working with local authorities and assessing the damage to ensure both clubs are safe before reopening. We will provide updates through our website, email and social media as soon as more information becomes available," it added.
The National Weather Service had issued a tornado warning for portions of Queens and Nassau County until 7:15 pm. urging residents to take shelter as the storm moved across Long Island.
