US peace negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Kyiv on Sunday after holding talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow to end the war between the neighbouring countries.
According to the White House, the two envoys are hoping for "equally productive meetings" in Ukraine after they "discussed substantive plans for next steps" with Putin on Saturday.
This is the first trip by US President Donald Trump's negotiators to Ukraine's capital.
Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have agreed to halt strikes on each other's capitals for three days amid the visit.
As Witkoff and Kushner were negotiating at the Kremlin, Zelensky said he and his team were "ready for the conversation", and that they were "interested in bringing the end of the war closer".
Posting on social media, he said, peace and security guarantees were needed, and it was "important to work in a coordinated, substantive, and realistic manner".
About US envoys' visit to Moscow
Saturday's talks in Moscow lasted three hours and were held behind closed doors in Putin's official residence in the heart of the Russian capital, according to Russian state media.
While the details about the talk are still emerging, both sides have shared positive remarks without giving any information.
'Extremely frank' talks between the US envoys and Putin
Putin adviser Yuri Ushakov described the talks as "constructive, extremely frank".
"The talks were not limited to an exchange of views on resolving the Ukrainian crisis - economic issues and potential major, mutually beneficial Russian-American projects were discussed in considerable detail," he said.
Ushakov also said "note was made of the Russian army's tangible advances in the combat zone" and that there was acknowledgement that talks needed to address "the root causes of the conflict".
Kushner and Witkoff have visited Russia several times but as Ukraine's airspace has been closed since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, it is not clear how they will be travelling to Kyiv from Moscow.
The talks come after Russia and Ukraine have intensified aerial attacks in recent months.
