Iran-backed Houthi forces have captured the historic Red Sea port city of Mocha following heavy clashes with pro-government troops, Yemeni official sources confirmed.
The withdrawal of government-aligned forces including the National Resistance and Giants Brigades marks one of the most critical operational shifts in the region since the 2022 truce, threatening to reignite full-scale war.
Threatening a global maritime chokepoint
By taking Mocha, located roughly 150 kilometers south of Hodeidah, Houthi fighters have consolidated power across nearly the entire western coastline of Yemen.
This positioning places the militant group within striking distance of the narrow Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital maritime corridor that handles a massive portion of the world’s commercial transit and oil commerce.
Defense analysts warn that controlling Mocha allows the group to threaten international shipping lanes using short-range artillery alongside their existing drone and missile capabilities.
Regional fallout and government retreat
Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council officials reported severe casualties during several days of sustained attacks before ordering troops to establish alternative command centers further south in Dhubab.
Meanwhile, the escalation has spilled over Yemen’s borders. The Houthis have intensified cross-border drone and ballistic missile strikes targeting energy infrastructure inside Saudi Arabia, prompting high-level diplomatic warnings and coalition military responses.
As government forces attempt to regroup, the loss of Mocha drastically diminishes their operational presence along the Red Sea coast.
