Gaming subscription services once provided strong value for money, enabling players to easily access a variety of exhilarating games for less than the cost of buying a single $70 game.

However, significantly increasing prices are making it difficult for some players to easily justify.

Gamers cancel services like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus

A recent report from Circana’s Future of Insights for Video Games Consumer Survey discovered that over 40% of users who cancel services like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus actually get interested in the subscriptions but leave because of increasing prices.

The findings suggest that higher rates are becoming a significant factor behind cancellations instead of dissatisfaction with the services themselves.

Overall rising and inflation household expenses are making it more challenging for consumers to maintain extra monthly subscriptions.

Xbox Game Pass, for example, has become significantly more expensive over the years. Its Ultimate plan is now available for $30 per month before being minimised to $23 that still represents a considerable expense for gamers who already pay for other services.

Moreover, the report underscores another issue that affects subscription users: The substantial number of accessible titles. While having hundreds of games can make a service attractive, several subscribers may struggle to browse enough time to play them.

Others may subscribe due to the perceived value but eventually cancel after realising they aren’t using the service frequently.

Despite these challenges, the survey indicates that many users do not cancel because they dislike the services. Instead, rising costs and limited usage are encouraging them to reconsider their subscriptions.

As gaming subscriptions continue to become more expensive, companies continue to face increasing pressure to balance pricing with the value players expect.
