Engineers and energy crews in Cuba have managed to restore power across major sections of the national electrical grid following a total collapse that left millions of residents plunged into darkness.
The widespread outage marked the eighth nationwide power blackout this year, underscoring the extreme vulnerability of the Caribbean island’s energy infrastructure.
Transmission failure triggers widespread outage
According to statements from Cuba’s Ministry of Energy and Mines and state-run utility “Union Electrica (UNE),” the collapse was triggered by a technical fault along the 220-kilovolt transmission line connecting Matanzas and Cienfuegos.
Unstable weather conditions further compromised the system causing a cascading failure that disconnected the western and eastern power sectors from the main grid.
Restoration efforts and essential services
Emergency response teams immediately activated restoration protocols to rebuild regional energy loops and stabilize high-voltage transmission lines. Crews prioritized power feeds to hospitals, water treatment plants and vital public infrastructure.
While electricity has slowly returned to parts of Havana and surrounding provinces through localized “micro-islands,” officials caution that supply remains fragile and subject to continued rolling cuts.
Deepening energy infrastructure crisis
The national power system suffers from chronic fuel shortages and decades-old thermoelectric facilities operating far below capacity.
Tighter foreign trade sanctions and a reduced influx of imported oil have severely restricted generator operations leaving local utility providers unable to cover peak demand.
As repairs continue, authorities are urging citizens to limit electricity consumption to help maintain system balance during peak hours.
