Faiq Bolkiah, widely recognized as the world’s richest footballer, has officially found himself without a club after his contract expired with Thai League 1 outfit Ratchaburi FC.
Despite possessing a family fortune estimated at over £15 billion ($20 billion) – an astounding wealth that dwarfs the combined earnings of global superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi – the 28-year-old winger remains focused on pursuing his passion on the pitch.
Royalty on the pitch
Bolkiah is no ordinary athlete. He is a member of the Brunei royal family, being the nephew of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and the son of Prince Jefri Bolkiah.
While his family’s immense fortune includes thousands of luxury cars, private jets and lavish palaces, Bolkiah has spent his life striving to forge a distinct identity through professional football.
From premier league academies to free agency
Born in Los Angeles, Bolkiah spent his formative development years in England. He refined his technical skill across top youth setups enjoying notable academy stints at Southampton, Chelsea and Leicester City.
However, breaking into the elite level of European football proved challenging. He subsequently embarked on a senior career with Portuguese side Maritimo before making the move to Southeast Asian football in late 2021.
After two seasons with Chonburi FC, Bolkiah joined Ratchaburi FC in 2023, where he features regularly and scored two goals in 23 appearances. The Brunei national team captain, who has six caps to his name, now enters the market as a high-profile free agent.
