Why Elon Musk calls Instagram ‘for girls’: 5 things behind his Meta feud

Elon Musk has once again taken a jab at Instagram, calling Meta as being “for girls” in a brief post on X.

The remark quickly sparked debate digitally; however, it also underscored the long-running rivalry between Musk’s X and Meta’s social-media platform.

1. Musk repeated his ‘Instagram is for girls’ remark

The tech billionaire made the comment on October 1, 2026, while responding to a post from Geiger Capital announcing that it had already deleted the Meta-owned Instagram and calling it an “inherently female app.”

While responding to the comment, Musk said, “Instagram is for girls.”

2. He has made the similar claim before

The remarks do not mark Musk’s first time making a gender-based statement.

In May, Elon Musk wrote that Instagram was “for girls” during a discussion about social-media habits.

His earlier remarks sparked immense debate on social media about gender stereotypes online.

3. Instagram and X represent rival platforms

The statement comes against the backdrop of a wider competition between Musk’s X and Meta.

The Meta-owned Instagram primarily focuses on images, short-form videos, creators and lifestyle content, while X has built its identity around public conversations, news and real-time discussion.

4. The rivalry grew after Threads launched

Meta’s Threads aims to outdo X with its launch in 2023 with close association with Instagram.

The company developed Instagram’s team and used the company’s accounts to assist users join the app, offering Meta a strong connection to its existing social-media audience.

5. The feud now extends beyond social media

The Musk-Meta rivalry is no longer limited to competing social platforms. Musk’s xAI and Meta are aiming to outdo each other in the highly competitive landscape of AI.

While Musk has yet to provide a detailed explanation for why he considers Instagram “for girls,” his latest four-word remark was enough to reignite debate over gender, social-media culture and the continuing Musk-Meta rivalry.
