Amitabh Bachchan has previously spoken about his experience with myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular autoimmune condition that left him fearing he might not be able to continue his acting career.
Inside Amitabh Bachchan's health struggles
The Silsila actor's health struggles emerged during his recovery from the serious injury he suffered while filming Coolie in 1982.
He later recalled experiencing extreme fatigue, difficulty swallowing and problems with muscle control, symptoms that left him questioning whether he would be able to continue his acting career.
A key turning point came when filmmaker Manmohan Desai offered him flexible roles that accommodated his physical limitations, including concepts involving wheelchair-bound, seated or silent characters.
The support helped Bachchan regain confidence as he navigated both his health and career.
With medical treatment, rest and adjustments to his workload, Bachchan gradually regained his strength and returned to acting.
He went on to enjoy major career successes, including Shahenshah, before later becoming a prominent television host.
Amitabh Bachchan’s public comments about his experience, including discussions on Kaun Banega Crorepati, have also helped bring greater attention to the condition and the challenges associated with neuromuscular disorders.
Everything to know about Myasthenia gravis
Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease that causes fluctuating weakness and rapid fatigue in voluntary skeletal muscles.
It happens when the immune system mistakenly creates antibodies that block or destroy acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction, preventing nerve signals from properly communicating with the muscles.
While there is no absolute cure, treatments can manage symptoms effectively, and many individuals achieve long periods of remission.
Key Symptoms
Symptoms can vary depending on the muscles affected and may include drooping eyelids and double vision, which are often among the first signs.
The condition can also affect the muscles involved in speaking, chewing and swallowing, while weakness may extend to the neck, arms, legs and facial muscles.
In more severe cases, weakness of the muscles responsible for breathing can lead to a potentially life-threatening myasthenic crisis, which requires urgent medical attention.
Causes
Myasthenia gravis occurs when the immune system produces antibodies that disrupt communication between nerves and muscles.
Abnormalities of the thymus gland, including an enlarged thymus or thymoma, are also associated with the condition. It can develop at any age, while certain symptoms may worsen with infections, physical stress, exhaustion, pregnancy or some medications.
Treatment
Treatment for myasthenia gravis focuses on managing symptoms and controlling abnormal immune activity.
Since there is no definitive cure, treatment is tailored to the type and severity of the disease and the patient’s antibody status.
