Selena Gomez has opened up about the challenges she faces on her journey to motherhood, revealing that medical issues mean she cannot safely carry a child.

In a 2024 interview with Vanity Fair, the Only Murder In The Building star candidly shared her plans for future motherhood with Benny Blanco.

Gomez, who is married to Benny Blanco, revealed that due to medical issues, she is unable to carry her own children.

She discussed her medical challenges, including lupus and a bipolar disorder diagnosis.

“I haven’t ever said this…but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” Gomez stated.

She added, “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while…”

Gomez could face serious health complications during pregnancy, making it unsafe for her to carry a child.

She has also spoken openly about grieving the possibility of experiencing a traditional pregnancy before considering other paths to motherhood.

Impact of Lupus on Selena Gomez's Health

Selena Gomez’s lupus has played a major role in her health journey, including the kidney transplant she underwent in 2017 after the disease affected her kidneys.

Because of her medical complications, Gomez has said she cannot safely carry a child, a reality she has openly discussed while considering other paths to motherhood.

Lupus can increase the risk of pregnancy complications, particularly when the disease affects the kidneys or is not well controlled.

Bipolar Disorder and the challenge of medications

In addition to lupus, Selena Gomez has spoken publicly about her bipolar disorder diagnosis and treatment.

She has said the medications she takes to manage the condition could make pregnancy unsafe, adding another challenge to her journey toward motherhood.

Alternative paths to motherhood

Gomez has said she is open to adoption and surrogacy as ways to build a family. While her path to motherhood may differ from what she originally imagined, she has expressed hope for the future.
