Sarah Hyland’s kidney journey has been a major part of the Modern Family star’s life, starting with a condition she had since birth.
The Geek Charming alum has been vocal about her medical condition of kidney dysplasia, kidney failure, dialysis and the two kidney transplants she underwent as a young adult.
1. Hyland was born with kidney dysplasia
As mentioned earlier, Sarah was born with a severe disease of kidney dysplasia, meaning her kidneys did not develop normally ahead of birth.
She has always experienced severe renal disease throughout childhood, although medical treatment assisted in delaying aggravating conditions; however, she had to undergo a kidney transplant at the age of 21.
2. She initially received kidney from father for transplant
In 2012, the Love Island artist got a kidney from her father, actor Edward James Hyland.
Initially, the transplant assisted her in managing kidney disease and continued her career, including her work on Modern Family.
3. Her body eventually rejected the transplant
Unfortunately, Hyland’s transplanted kidney failed after her body rejected the organ. She subsequently needed dialysis, a treatment that assisted removing excess fluid and waste from the blood when the kidneys are unable to do normal function.
4. Her brother became her second donor
The 35-year-old’s younger brother, Ian Hyland, donated her sister a kidney in 2017, After undergoing the necessary evaluation, later describing the procedure as giving her another chance at life.
5. Her experience raised awareness about kidney disease
Hyland discussed how chronic kidney disorder dampened her health, energy and work-related ability.
Despite her illness, she remained dedicated towards her work while managing hospital visits, dialysis and medications.
Sarah Hyland’s kidney transplant journey has helped bring greater attention to kidney dysplasia, organ donation and the challenges that can continue even after transplantation. Her story also underscores why ongoing medical care is essential for transplant recipients.
