WhatsApp is reportedly preparing to release a new feature that could make requesting someone's location easier by launching a dedicated “Request location” option within its location-sharing menu.
As per Android Authority, the feature was found in WhatsApp version 2.26.41.11 through an APK teardown.
The publication manually enabled the option on a test device, suggesting that the messaging platform is developing an easier way for users to ask others to share their whereabouts.
Currently, the Meta-owned WhatsApp lets users to share their current location as a static map point or share their live location, which updates as they move.
However, users who want someone else to share their location generally need to share a text message explaining what they need.
The forthcoming feature could simplify this process. By tapping “Request location” in the “Send location” menu, users can send a dedicated card labelled “Location request” directly into a chat.
The card is particularly designed to make the request more noticeable and possibly minimise the need to explain how to access location-sharing settings.
However, the feature is currently under development, and its complete functionality has yet to be officially confirmed.
Android Authority reported that it could not test how recipients respond to location requests because the message appeared as unsupported on a second device.
One possibility is that recipients will be directed to WhatsApp's location-sharing screen, where they can choose whether to share their current or live location. However, it has yet to be officially confirmed.
The feature resembles Apple's iMessage location-request option that allows users to ask contacts to share their whereabouts through a dedicated menu.
WhatsApp has yet to officially announce a release date. Since the discovery comes from an APK teardown, the feature may change during development or never reach a public release.
