In a landmark decision for Canadian unity, residents of Alberta have voted decisively to remain part of Canada, roundly rejecting a historic referendum on separation.

Early official results released by Elections Alberta revealed that approximately 76 percent of voters chose to stay in Confederation, while only 24 percent backed taking further steps toward independence.

Discontent sparks referendum

The historic vote was initiated earlier this year by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith following years of simmering economic and political friction between the energy-rich province and the federal government.

Proponents of the vote argued that Alberta was being unfairly treated by federal economic and energy policies, turning the separation debate into a national flashpoint.

Political leaders react

Prime Minister Mark Carney, who had urged Albertans to deliver a strong message in favor of national unity, hailed the decisive outcome.

Premier Smith also acknowledged the voters’ firm choice, posting online that Albertans chose a stronger province within a united nation.

Despite the defeat, independence advocates noted that the vote elevated Western concerns to the forefront of national politics.
