Governor orders inquiry into maltreatment of journalists
LAHORE: PUNJAB Governor/ Chancellor Lt Gen (r) Khalid Maqbool has said that he has ordered an inquiry into misconduct with journalists at the Government College University (GCU) and those responsible will be punished.
He was talking to journalists after the prize awarding ceremony of the third International Kangroo Mathematics contest (IKMC) 2007 held at the GCU on Saturday. Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Aftab was also present on the occasion.
The governor said he had been informed about misconduct with journalists at the GCU some days ago. He said an inquiry had been ordered.
Last week at the annual convocation ceremony of the varsity, some GCU officials misbehaved with reporters and barred them from covering the event.
On Saturday again, a journalist of a daily newspaper was denied entry to the hall where award ceremony of the third International Kangroo Mathematics contest was being held. Saturday’s ceremony was scheduled to start at 9am whereas it started with a delay of almost an hour.
Earlier, addressing the prize awarding ceremony, Khalid Maqbool said the government was trying to improve the quality of mathematics education in the country adding institutions such as Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences was playing a pivotal role to this end. He said mathematics owes great importance in the realm of technological advancements and has its application in various fields. He said that there was a time when Muslims enjoyed authority in various fields and the cities like Cairo and Baghdad had the distinction of attracting people from different parts of the world who visit there to quench their academic thrust.
Khalid Maqbool highly praised GCU’s Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences for imparting quality education to students.
He told the participants that the government had provided Rs 80 million for the renovation of GCU SMS building. He also applauded the foreign faculty working at the school and hoped that this school would help produce more Nobel laureates in future as well.
He also praised the students and parents who had come from far-flung areas of the country to participate in the ceremony. Earlier, Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences Director General Dr A D Raza Choudhry presented the welcome address and informed about the recent achievements and goals attained by the school in the subject of mathematics. He said that 33,000 students from 788 schools of the country participated in the International Kangroo Mathematics Contest 2007 and their number had doubled as compared to the last year.
He thanked Dr Barbu Berceanu for his dedication to coaching the national team of Pakistan which participated in the International Mathematical Olympiad 2007.
He also thanked Dr Ioan Tomescu who supervised the first three students of the Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences during the completion of their PhD studies. Later, Khalid Maqbool awarded medals to students.
Deans of various faculties and a large number of teachers of mathematics, parents and students participated in the ceremony.
