WNBA star Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from her wife, Cherelle Griner, after nearly eight years of marriage. Court documents confirm that the 35-year-old basketball center submitted the legal paperwork in Fulton County, Georgia.

Union described as broken

The court records reveal that the couple officially separated on July 24. In her petition to end the marriage, Brittney stated that their relationship is “irretrievably broken” with no hope of saving the union.

Custody request for son

Brittney and Cherelle share a 2-year-old son named Bash. In the court documents, Brittney asked the judge to grant “joint legal custody” so that both parents can continue making decisions together regarding their son’s upbringing.

Strong support in tough times

Cherelle, a professional attorney, gained national media attention as a vocal advocate for her wife during Brittney’s 10-month detention in Russia in 2022.

Following Brittney’s release, Cherelle described feeling “overwhelmingly happy” and expressed relief that she could “finally exhale” once her wife was safely back home.

Relationship born in college

The couple first met while attending Baylor University together in Texas and eventually married in 2018. Representatives for both parties have not yet released an official public statement regarding the divorce
