Carlos Alcaraz's injury sparked new concerns after he withdrew from the Cincinnati Open.
According to The Independent, the tournament on Tuesday, August 4, announced that the defending champion will not participate in the tournament due to an “ongoing” wrist injury.
Everyone was hoping to see the seven-time Grand Slam champion’s comeback before the last major tournament of the season, as he recently posted his tentative return to the court on social media.
However, the announcement has not only faded those hopes but also triggered questions about the “seriousness” of the injury.
In an announcement on X, the tournament organizers wrote, “Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open. Wishing all the best to our 2025 champion in his recovery process. Can’t wait to welcome you next year!”
Alcaraz injury update
Tournament director Bob Moran told the BBC that the 23-year-old Spaniard is trying his best to recover from an “ongoing wrist injury.”
Moran stated, “We know Carlos is doing everything he can to get back to playing tournaments as soon as possible. We wish him the best with his recovery and look forward to welcoming him back to Cincinnati in the future.”
Tennis world reacts to Carlos Alcaraz's withdrawal
The withdrawal has now cast doubts on his US Open defense too and the tennis community is starting to lose hope in his return.
Sports journalist Ben Rothenberg said, “I would assume Alcaraz will also be out of the US Open now, just because it would seem so daunting to come back from a major injury into a best-of-five tournament when totally cold.”
Randy Walker of Vero Beach Futures wrote on X, “If Carlos Alcaraz is not playing Cincinnati, then you would think he should play the Winston-Salem Open if he wants to try and give it a go at the US Open.”
It is worth noting that Alcaraz has been sidelined with a wrist injury since April 17. He withdrew from the Barcelona Open, missing the defense of his French Open title and Wimbledon.
