The Seattle Seahawks have agreed to a landmark four-year, $132 million contract extension with star cornerback Devon Witherspoon.
The historic agreement features over $101 million in guaranteed money officially making Witherspoon the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history at an average of $33 million per season.
Heated behind the scenes talks
The massive deal comes after intense negotiations leading up to Seattle’s preseason opener. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, “three-time Pro-Bowl CB Devon Witherspoon and the Seahawks reached agreement” after “Witherspoon’s agent and the Seahawks have had heated negotiations in recent days that now results in an agreement today.”
Praise for professional focus
Despite the ongoing high-stakes business discussions during training camp, Witherspoon continued practicing and maintained complete focus on the field.
Head coach Mike Macdonald recently shared high praise for the young star, noting he was “really impressed” by Witherspoon’s ability to seamlessly separate complex contract talks from his day-to-day preparation on the field.
Cornerstone of championship defense
Since being chosen fifth overall in the 2023 draft, Witherspoon has emerged as an elite force. He earned Pro Bowl honors in each of his first three seasons and served as a core leader on the defense that propelled Seattle to a Super Bowl LX title in February. The new contract ties the star defender to Seattle through 2031.
